Grand Canyon, Summer ’07

Growing up traveling typically involved family trips to visit family in other states or summer beach trips. In the summer after I graduated high school we took a family vacation to Phoenix, Arizona and the Grand Canyon; this is the first time I can remember truly feeling excited about visiting a new place. The next five years were spent as a broke college student at North Carolina State University while I earned a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering. Being a college student didn’t allow for much travel until the summer of 2010 when I did a study abroad trip to Australia. This trip was only five weeks long and was with a group of other students but it was my first experience with international travel and it changed me forever. After graduating I took a job as a Project Manager for a small local construction company. While having a full time job certainly helps you afford to travel, the constant working makes it difficult to actually go anywhere.

During the seven years I worked this job I have been able to take a few trips (cruise to the Bahamas, a week in Jamaica, a week in London, a week in Athens) but more importantly I was able to save up a decent amount of money so that now I can afford to take some time off from my career to travel and start building this blog. When I was younger I thought all I wanted was to have a steady, cozy office job where I could make good money; however, after seven years working in the same office with the same people and making the same daily commute I came to the realization that if I do this much longer I am going to go crazy so I applied for and was granted a Working Holiday Visa for Australia.

Aegina, Greece, March 2019

Currently this blog will be documenting my year in Australia and providing tips and advice for others visiting the same places. The long term plan for this blog is for it to become your one stop destination for everything travel from information about destinations to budget travel advise. My hope is that I can help someone else who might be in a similar situation get started living their dreams of traveling or at least help someone have a better time in Australia than they would have if they hadn’t read my blog. The thing that will differentiate this blog from the thousands of other travel blogs out there is that I am not a long winded writer so my articles will be short and to the point which I think will be a positive for most people.

If you’ve made it this far, I would just like to say thank you for visiting SuitcasesAndSkylines, I hope you enjoy it! Please feel free to contact me through the Contact page or any of the associate social media pages.
